Why Everyone Should Sing!
The first musical instrument you have is your voice. It’s always with you, requires little maintenance and costs nothing! People have been singing for as long as history has been recorded. We sing for many reasons: to express emotions, to ease sorrow, to celebrate life events, to enjoy being part of a group, to tell stories and to have fun!
I’ve read that 80% of the stimuli that reach our brains is sound. We are literally surrounded by sound, a kind of energy made by vibrations. A vibrating object causes air molecules to move, creating sound waves that we can perceive through our ears and our bodies. And, when we talk and sing we create vibrations with our vocal cords that also resonate throughout our bodies.
Singing exercises a wider range of vibrations. You can actually feel this. If you sing an OH sound in your lowest range, you can place your hand on your chest and feel the vibrations. If you raise your voice to your speaking range and sing AH, the vibrations are felt in your throat. And, if you siren up to a cartoony high EE, the vibration leaves your throat and resonates through your sinuses. Your facial bones make this one harder to feel! So every time we create sound, we are really giving ourselves a massage. Try it! Next blog: You say you don’t like singing?
