The Value of Music Participation 2
I interviewed 12 undergraduate college students in my study asking why they continued participating in band and orchestra when their majors were in completely different fields. Here are more of their reasons.
They recognized the stress reduction that results from the “flow experience” of producing music.
The intense mental involvement described by Csikszentmihalyi as the “flow experience” produces relief from anxiety and stress, The value of this result of playing music was clearly described by seven participants.
Kristy: “Music is a good way for me to relax and like de-stress a little bit.”
Nate: “I think it’s [playing music is] more of a stress reliever.”
Katie: “If you had a hard day and you go play for a while it makes you feel a little better about yourself . If I have had a bad day, it’s a whole lot better to play than to go sit and think about it”
Greg: “If I had a big test or something, that’s usually when I’ll go and practice.”
Steve “I would say [playing is] definitely a release of stress.”
Kim: When I play “I don’t think about any of the other stresses that I have.”
Brad: “At that one moment I’m playing. it is just something where I can release myself. I feel like I’m just kind of opening my mind when I play my music”
